So if that symbol doesn't suit your needs, you may as well go ahead and build one. NFPA absorbed JIC back in the 70's, I think, and nothing's changed since then that I know of. But to either, I'd have to say, 'not likely'.
As far as updating the original symbol, I assume you mean the graphics in the block rather than the design of the symbol itself. There's nothing forcing you to keep to it, unless a customer wants it that way. The NFPA 'standard' is really more of a guideline. I think most everyone builds custom symbols, it just depends on how much real-estate you have and how much information needs to be packed onto it. For me it seem to work best to take a symbol from the out of the box library, explode it and create the graphics for the application then add the additional attributes I want using the symbol builder tool. If you are making the symbol for a diagram you should have more space so you should be able to make the symbol look more like the real device. That is to say if you are making a symbol for a schematic and your schematic has a rung spacing of 0.75 inch, you will want the symbol and it’s attributes to fit within that spacing. In general you want the symbol and related attributes to fit the drawing and have the necessary information.
I usually tweak them a little for the look want.
The out of the box symbols have been pretty much the same for years. I don't suppose there is a one-size fits all type of symbol, but I am curious as to what others do when representing sensors? but then it gets kind of cluttered around the symbol when placing it on rungs. I've also played around with putting as much information as I can on one symbol i.e. Then you have to go to 2 or 3 different pages for 1 sensor, (something I don't like) I've tried making a photo-eye a parent symbol and placing it strictly on a power schematic while placing child contacts associated with it representing NO or NC contacts.
